SIBM Pune has a robust and structured approach for promoting entrepreneurship among students, most notably through its MBA in Innovation and Entrepreneurship (MBA I&E) programme, launched in 2014. This program has proven to be a success due to its comprehensive blend of academic rigour, practical exposure, and strong ecosystem support.
Key reasons for its success and campus activities that promote entrepreneurship include
The MBA I&E program is tailored specifically for aspiring entrepreneurs. It combines core business fundamentals with specialized courses such as Creativity and Problem Solving, Design Thinking, Lean Start-up, and Entrepreneurial Finance. Every semester consists of a project where students are encouraged to work on live start-up projects, develop prototypes, and participate in entrepreneurial internships, giving them real-world exposure.
The program is supported by the Symbiosis Centre for Entrepreneurship and Innovation (SCEI), our technology incubator supported by Dept. of Science and Technology, Govt. of India, which provides mentorship, seed funding, co-working space, and access to investor networks. Many students have successfully incubated their start-ups here.
The E-cell dedicated to entrepreneurship development hosts regular events across the year such as business plan competitions, start-up conclaves, such as E-Summit, which bring in leading entrepreneurs, investors, and incubators to engage with students. SIBM is proud to host its own Shark Tank event named The Grand Pitch. The previous year's addition of The Grand Pitch (2024) generated funding of 22.5 cr for different start-ups.
E-cell also connects students with a network of successful entrepreneurs, alumni, and investors for one-on-one mentoring, which significantly enhances venture development and idea validation.
In summary, SIBM Pune’s MBA in Innovation and Entrepreneurship doesn’t just teach entrepreneurship — it actively enables and nurtures it. This programme’s hands-on, mentor-led, and innovation-driven environment has made it a successful model for fostering entrepreneurial spirit in India’s higher education landscape.
SIBM Pune conducts its Orientation Programme in a novel way. The very first day of the programme is made special for the students. After the ceremonial address by the Director, the students are divided into teams of twenty. Each team is handed over to a team of two faculty members. The faculty members take their teams of twenty students through a series of interesting ice-breaking sessions and team building exercises for the rest of the day. The day ends with a group task for the next day. On the second day, teams of twenty have to perform on stage. The stage performance is divided into parts. One is a purely academic part.
Second part is a cultural performance which may include singing, dance, mimickery etc. Next two days are generally devoted to outbound activities leading to development of team building and problem solving skills. The last two days are generally devoted to experience sharing sessions by corporate executives as well as entrepreneurs, preferably from the alumni pool.
Pedagogy at SIBM Pune is a mix of many methodologies. Apart from the usual chalk-n-talk, there is a conscious effort to make the sessions interactive by using case studies and references of latest developments in the relevant field. In addition, students are encouraged to undertake multiple projects to hone their research and analytical skills. Latest tools and techniques like Business Simulations are used wherever possible. Ample amount of guest lectures are organized by inviting leading corporate executives, especially from the alumni pool. In fact, SIBM Pune has consistently received Awards for excellent industry interaction. Students are also encouraged to write success stories of illustrious alumni, which the college publishes in the form of books. Field visits are also a regular feature.

Research activities in collaboration with Indian and Global organizations in the following areas:
1. Innovating for Emerging Markets
Global economy is going through a rapid change with the rise of emerging economies. It is estimated that the emerging economies will account for more than half of the world’s GDP by 2025. Asia’s GDP will be larger than that of the US and Europe combined by 2025. These trends are transforming conventional thinking about what it takes for any company to succeed on the global stage. For companies with global aspirations, emerging markets are becoming far more important than developed markets. India makes particularly central for any company due to size of its market. The research at SIBM Pune (Innovation & Entrepreneurship) is focused on developing models and frameworks that enables companies to develop innovative products and solutions for the emerging markets.
2. Indian model of Innovation
India is slowly emerging as a global innovation hub with large skills base and human talent. Smart Indian companies today have come up with new technologies and radical business models to penetrate the country’s mass markets. Indian companies have done this by transforming almost every element of the value chain, from products to supply-chain management, and creating novel business models. The research is aimed at identifying how Indian companies have been able to innovate with limited use of resources.
